Goldie Barto

Auburn – Goldie Barto, 92, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa.  Funeral service was Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Auburn Presbyterian Church in Auburn.  Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery in Auburn.

 

Goldie Marie Hoover Barto was the oldest of Fred and Verla Hatfield Hoover’s five children.  Goldie was born at home in Grand Junction, Iowa on March 30, 1916.  She graduated from Lake City High School on May 24, 1934.  While attending High School she completed the Normal Training Course which permitted her to teach public school in Iowa.  Her teaching career began in several rural schools in the Sac and Calhoun County area.

 

Goldie married Floyd Larrabee Barto on February 1, 1941 in Tekamah, Nebraska.  When World War II began, Floyd was called up and they moved to Rolla, Missouri, near Fort Leonard Wood, where Floyd was stationed.  Goldie continued to teach in rural schools in Missouri and attended college at the Missouri School of Mines.  After the war Goldie and Floyd bought a house in Carroll on Highland Drive and lived there for 10 years.  In 1957 the family moved to Auburn.

On June 23, 2008 Goldie died after emergency surgery at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

 

Goldie and Floyd had seven daughters; twins, Constance and Winifred (died in infancy), and Terrie, Connie, Barbara, Jane and Patricia.

 

Survivors include five daughters; Terrie Barto and John Van Ness, Connie O’Sullivan and husband Mike, Barbara Gasper and husband Nick, Jane Barto and Jim Renze, and Tricia Barto; a special niece, Michelle Lee and sons, Eric Lashbrook and Ben Brown; five grandchildren, Shawn Gasper and wife Tiffany, Brandie Gasper and Jim Williams, Nathan Barto-Van Ness, Meesha Barto-Van Ness and Jason Herman, Katie O’Sullivan; one great-grandson, Gage Gasper; sister Mae Gorman and sister-in-law Eileen Hoover as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

 

Goldie was preceded in death by her sister, Aretha Hoover; infant twin daughters, Constance and Winifred Barto; brother, Francis Hoover; parents, Fred and Verla Hoover; sister, Thelma Miller; husband, Floyd L. Barto; sister-in-law, Hope Lee; nephew, Larry Davis and brother-in-law, Harold Gorman.
