There are four generations of funeral service behind the Lampe name. It is a family that goes back to the early 1900's.
In 1917, John Lampe studied and became licensed as an undertaker. John was the undertaker in Pocahontas until he retired in 1947. John's nephew, Norbert Lampe, attended mortuary school in St. Louis following his discharge from the U.S. Navy after WWII. Norbert served his mortuary apprenticeship in Albert City, Iowa, at the Nelson Funeral Home. Norbert purchased a funeral home in 1954 in Ashton, Iowa. He sold the business in 1969 and worked at Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake, Iowa until retiring in 1988.
Norbert's son, Keith Lampe, currently owns and operates Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City, Iowa. Norbert's niece, Janet (Origer) Hubbell, is the fourth licensed funeral director in the Lampe family. She is employed at the Gunderson Funeral Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Abby Janssen, Keith's daughter, graduated from Mortuary School in Ankeny, Iowa and is now a licensed funeral director at the Lampe Funeral Home, Lake City.
From 1917 until the present time represents 89 years of funeral service. Most several generation funeral directors are great-grandfather, grandfather, father, then son. But in the Lampe family it's uncle, nephew, son, cousin, and daughter.
Lampe Funeral Home offers a tradition of a local family serving other local families. Lampe's extends a service to them with the care and dignity that they would give to their own family members upon their passing.
