Lanesboro – Gary Brown, 77, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Lanesboro United Methodist Church with Pastor Lorinda Hoover officiating and burial was in the Lanesboro Cemetery.
Gary Allan Brown was born on June 22, 1939, in Carroll County, Iowa to Allan and Della (Shannon) Brown. After graduating from Lohrville High School in 1957, he served in the United States Navy and was hand-picked to play in the Admiral’s Band, where he played the tuba and also the string bass. Following his naval service, Gary returned to the Lanesboro area where he farmed for over 40 years. On May 2, 1976, Gary married Betsie Sokol at the Lanesboro United Methodist Church. Both Gary and Betsie were very active as leaders for the church youth group, UMYF. Gary was also a member of the Churdan American Legion, Farm Bureau, and the UMC In-Betweeners.
Gary is survived by his wife Betsie of Lanesboro, children Duane (Dana) of Citrus Springs, FL, Bill (Karla) of Glidden and Ruthie (Bryan) Dolezal of Marion, IA, step-daughters Lynne (Ted) Hacker and Carole Olsen, 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-daughter Jean Lenz, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
