St. Paul, MN – Edgar W. Koster, 95, formerly of Auburn died peacefully in St. Paul MN on Thursday January 26, 2017. Edgar was born in Breda IA to Clem and Hazel Koster on September 29, 1921. During the last few years of his life, he shared a lot about his growing up years in Breda. He liked to hunt, fish and work on the farm. He told stories of using horses in the fields and getting out of school for 2 weeks in the fall for harvesting corn. He talked about getting electricity and Grandpa’s first car. And he also shared stories of shenanigans he played on, and with, his siblings.

In 1942, Edgar enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country in the South Pacific during WW II. He spent time in New Zealand, Efate, Australia and was on a mine sweeper that cleared the mines out of the waters around Iwo Jima before the great victory. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and he returned to Breda to help farm. For entertainment, he would go to dances in the area ballrooms, and it was at one of these dances he met Delores Bachman; 3 months later he proposed to her.

In 1947, he and Delores were married. They began their life together farming near Breda. In 1957, they bought a farm in Stacyville, and continued farming until 1964, when he switched careers to sell insurance and later, real estate. In 1978, Edgar retired and they moved to Clinton, Arkansas so he could spend more time fishing. In 1990, they moved to Auburn, IA to be closer to family. Edgar and Delores celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. Even after 50 years, Edgar would still get a spark in his eyes whenever Delores walked into the room.  When she died in 2000, his life was never the same.

Edgar and Delores had 11 children. Surviving him are his daughters, Karen Cain, Jane, Nancy (Mike)Teasdale and Mary (Efren) Vintimilla and sons, Daniel, Dale (Jennifer), Paul (Carole) and Craig; daughter in law Teresa Ondracek; 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is further survived by 2 brothers, 5 sisters, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife, Delores, sons, Pat and Mark, daughter Kristy, son in law Larry Cain, his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

Edgar donated his body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. A memorial Mass was held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn with burial at a later date.
